A Golden Gate Audubon Field Trip on a Sunday morning. Perfect sunny weather, with little breeze. We birded Chain of Lakes in west end of the park. Over thirty people showed up but we got even more species of bird. Highlight was a Hutton’s Vireo calling in oaks overhead, pretty good views of a bird usually secretive after spring mating season.
Mating: pair of Red-tailed Hawks at Middle Lake. Ravens building nest high in Monterey pine south of Bercut horse ring. Allen’s Humingbirds aggressive and showy. One male was making the territorial rocking-chair flight over his special bushes. Another posed for a digital portrait in bright sunlight. Downys calling and drumming. Calling Pied-billed Grebe in North Lake. Red-winged Blackbirds singing all along the lakes’ shores.
Swallows over North Lake. Warblers in flocks. Bushtits and Pygmy Nuthatches in pairs, not winter flocks. At Middle Lake yellow-bellied Wilson’s Warblers zipped through low branches and foliage, finally one posed for us on brambles in clear view. Several males were calling. Spring was afoot and many bushes were in bloom including the native ceanothus, the eucs from Australia, cherry trees and plums.
