Big beak, big moths around Milpe, Ecuador

Three views of the White-whiskered Hermit, a snazzy little number zooming about the garden of a bird-rich restaurant in Rio Banco above Rio Blanco.  There was a Green Thorntail there as well but I did not convince him to pose.  I’ve already blogged some of the fine tanagers this eatery served in the garden.  Late that evening we got some good views of one of the big-beakers, a Pale-mandibled Aracari.

Yes he has yellow and black streaks on his sweater.  Obviously he is one of the toucanclan.  There were many other great sightings this fifth day: Red-faced Spinetail, Cinnamon Becard, Plain Xenops, numerous blue morphos butterflies, Ornate Flycatcher.  And well-heard and then seen: the wind-chime bird, little duff-colored Wood Wren with the musical chiming song.

Day Six dawned at Milpe with heavy rain and heavy-duty insect life around the pre-dawn lights:

about five inches across the wings.

And then the owl moth:

the owl’s eye up close
