TEA-KETTLE, TEA-KETTLE, TEA-KETTLE or PEABODY, PEABODY, PEABODY

This is one of the two White-throated Sparrows that have wintered at Ashland Pond.  They’re now in breeding plumage and this one perched and sang in front of our OLLI field trip group this morning.  This species is unusual enough in the West that it’s song does not appear in most compilations of western bird songs.  But it’s a clear, easy-to-remember “peabody, peabody, peabody.” His appearance is roughly similar to both White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows, fellow members of the Zonotrichia genus. All have unmarked gray chests, head stripes and brown striped backs.  Only Mr. White-throat has flashy saffron lores.  The two W-Ts will migrate out soon.Birds from top left: Siskins bathing; Green Heron afar; Double-crested Cormorant with crest showing; Acorn Woodpecker aloft.

  1. The White-throated Sparrow says “Old Sam Peabody”. Or for the northerners, “Oh Sweet Canada”. The tea kettle mnemonic is usually attributed to Carolina Wren.
