VISIBILITY There are fewer leaves in the way and even less cover for ground-feeding birds. Clearer views, better pictures.
Both the mature Bald Eagle and the Red-shouldered Hawk in the oak would have been barely visible in summer.
The Hooded Mergansers have converged on Ashland Pond, one day there were eighteen on that acre of water. Out at Emigrant Lake there are often more Common Mergansers than that but they may be spread over several square miles of water. Or they may bunch up to search for schools of fish.
There are several Lewis’s Woodpeckers at Emigrant Lake, both in the Recreation Area and around the Pioneer Cemetery. I hope they stick around for our Christmas Count.
