A just-published study shows the extent of bird slaughter by free range housecats. The better fed the cat, the better it is at hunting in many cases. The bird-killing is not for food, but to satisfy millions of years of evolved instinct.

I put that on my Facebook page for all my friends who think it is so important for their kitties to get outside. I had also posted a Youtube video on my blog that showed a Townsend’s warbler at a birdbath in Portland – right in the middle of it, a cat popped up and made a swipe at the birds, but the videographer had no particular comment!! Oh, for cryin’ in the rain…

we own a cat, he is trained to a leash and is never allowed to range freely in our garden…even then he once killed a Junco, ground feeding, even though he’s on an eight foot leash and is fat and lazy…cats have evolved into very efficient killers, which is why they do so well when released in places like Hawaii and your local city park

our cat gets mice . . . used to have a dog who caught birds. dogs trump cats but may get birds. let your animals do what they know how to do
