SWALLOWSONG

“Come wander quietly and listen to the wind
Come here and listen to the sky
Come walking high above the rolling of the sea
And watch the swallows as they fly

There is no sorrow like the murmur of their wings
There is no choir like their song
There is no power like the freedom of their flight
While the swallows roam alone”

                                             –Richard  Farina

Among the many Tree Swallows swirling swiftly and softly above Emigrant Lake was at least one Violet-Green, the colorful cousin.  It was my first sighting of the year for that species, making me perhaps the last birder in Oregon to see one.  I could not rouse a single Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, but did see Common Yellowthroat at the lake and in the evening at Ashland Pond.  I eagerly await the first Black-headed Grosbeak and their interminable pre-dawn melodies.  The spring list mania is underway, a new bird every other day for weeks to come…?

Yelloow Warbler, Bullock’s Oriole, a couple vireos, three Empids, Wood-Pewee, W-Kingbird, AT Flycatcher, Lazuli, the rest of the sparrow clan, several the Warbler’s from Nashville to Black-throated Gray, some more sparrows, Green-tailed Towhee… all those birds at Klamath: Black Tern, Forster’s Tern, Redhead, various big grebes, Swainson’s Hawk…then Malheur with Burrowing Owl, Sage Thrasher and Sparrow, Curlew, Snipe, Willet, Wilson’s Phalarope, Bobolink, Eastern Kingbird…ah, spring, a listers dream when they come to you.BEAR CRK MERGS BEWR2 B-P POSTD CGS UPP (1280x960) CHAIR-E TREE ECD INOAK FERAL PARE GCS LEAFCUTTER2  GCS SCRFF G-H-O-N GSC-FILAREE GWT PAIRD GWT SWM1 HERNRY (1280x960)GCS MOLT LEAF CUTTER LLAMA HED MALE COMER MALE COMER2 OSP-NSTR1 OSP-NSTR2BBRD NESTBX BBRD-BOX (1280x960)Emigrant Lake, Jackson, US-OR

  1. Nice poem by Richard Farina. It’s been a while, but isn’t he the husband of Mimi Farina who is Joan Baez’s sister?
