PUBLIC LANDS GETTING PUBLIC SUPPORT

Today there was the first in a series of planned pro-public lands protests around Oregon. This one was in Bend and at least 100 people showed up, about five times more than the number of armed white men who occupied the Malheur NWR Headquarters over two weeks ago.  Among the speakers was Duncan Evered who is co-director of the Malheur Field Station where many of us birders stay when  we visit the refuge. By now I think I may have spent at least fifty nights there.  I know some inveterate birders, long-time Oregonians who’ve spent hundreds of nights at the Field Station.

The “Christian Science Monitor” took a look at the occupiers and their long-term goals. What this piece ignores is the climate which really doesn’t make ranching a very profitable enterprise and that many of the lobbyists and propagandists behind the anti-federal lands movement want to get their hands on forest and mining properties at low cost.  It is far easier to steam-roll a state legislature to lower environmental standards than the national government.  This article propounds the false connection between eastern Oregon logging and the Spotted Owl which does not exist in that part of the state.  The simple ecological truth is that eastern Oregon is arid and forests there cannot regenerate like they do in Georgia or South Carolina.  Thus logging cannot be open-ended or unregulated if there is any hope at maintaining forests.  Deforested areas, badly managed (for profit only) will likely become sagebrush steppe as the climate changes.  These are all issues far beyond the ken of most eastern newspaper reporters.  I suggested the “CSM” send somebody to go read Edward Abbey and Wallace Stegner.

MORE GUNNERS, NEW ROAD BUILDING

Despite one arrest in Burns yesterday the occupies continue undisturbed.  Oregon Public Broadcasting reports a few more occupiers have joined the group and supplies continue to flow in.  Some women in the grou0p are organizing meals and sharing the cooking.  Today the group built a new road at the headquarters to connect some of their central operations.

REPORTER’S NOTES ON TYPICAL DAY AROUND BURNS AND MALHEUR

FBI quiet, occupiers loving the media attention which brings them support from like-minded anti-federalists.

I am surprised the Governor of Texas hasn’t shown up to lend support.  He’s trying to obliterate the federal Constitution and take us back to the days of the Articles of Confederation.  Would Texas then be the first state in such a revised political state to reinstate apartheid (which we once called Jim Crow) or even bring back slavery? There are only a couple of pesky Constitutional Amendments standing in the way.  They could even find a way to re-adopt the Stars and Bars.

AND A LITTLE SATIRE FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
