MY FIRST FALL WARBLER

Now I know it’s really migration time for songbirds.  This afternoon I saw my first nomadic warbler of the season…and it wasn’t even a Yellow-rump.  One Black-throated Gray along the Willamette River in the cottonwoods bordering the river.

Other migrants there included the gangs of swallows and small swirl of swifts.  If I said “swifts in the air” it would be redundant or at least unnecessary.  I will still look forward to the frist time I can see one hanging inside a chimney.  The Vaux’s Swifts, BTW, are now putting on nightly shows at Chapman School in west Portland, Agate Hall in Eugene, the pottery kiln in Roseburg, the brick factory chimney in east San Rafael and other noted swift motels along their migration route.

COASTAL RANGE

Yesterday I drove up into the Coastal Range foothills.  Most interesting birds were a Pacific Wren and one lone Hooded Merganser on McGuire Reservoir along Meadowlake Road.
