BASKETT MORNING

Our McMinnville Park & Rec birding class went to Baskett Slough today for some field work on the local birds of fall and winter.  The fog cleared by mid-morning and there was–amazingly–no rain or wind.  Birding karma plus.

We found no surprises  but got good looks at Kestrel dining on utility pole, hunting Harrier, plenty of dabbling ducks in pretty good light, a huge flock of Red-winged Blackbirds along Smithfield at north end of the refuge, many flying flocks of geese and smaller groups of ducks in the air.  At one point something sent a giga-gaggle of geese in air at one time…thousands calling, swirling, forming Vs and then breaking apart.

There were some hunters’ guns within earing range.  The lone adult eagle never left his perch, so he was not responsible for sending the geese into a frenzy.
