BIRD NO LONGER ON THE WIRE

Leonard Cohen:

“Like a bird on the wire
“Like a drunk in a midnight choir
“I have tried in my way to be free.”

Leonard Cohen has left the room, left these troubled times, left us with his wisdom, his wit, his wiles and his wonder.  No man has left us more.

“The birds they sing
“at the break of day
“Start again,
“I heard them say,
“don’t dwell on what
“has passed away
“Or what is yet to be.”

“It’s coming from the sorrow on the street,
“the holy places where the races meet;
“from the homicidal bitchin’
“that goes down in every kitchen
“to determine who will serve and who will eat.
“From the wells of disappointment
“where the women kneel to pray
“for the grace of G-d in the desert here
“And the desert far away:
“Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.”

“Everybody knows that the dice are loaded. Everybody
“rolls with their fingers crossed.  Everybody knows the
“war is over.  Everybody knows the good guys lost. Every-
“body knows the fight was fixed: the poor stay poor, the
“rich get rich.  That’s how it goes.  Everybody knows.”

“Fare thee well my nightingale
“I lived but to be near you
“Though you are singing somewhere still
“I can no longer hear you.”

Now, at last, Leonard is up there on the floor with Hank Williams in that eternal Tower of Song. As he wrote:

“There are some men
“who should have mountains
“to bear their names to time.”

  1. Beautiful, Harry. Thank you. I love him too. We are so lucky to have known him and to be left with his music.
