LOSIN’ OUR PUFFINS

There is even more unhappy news in the Arctic than disappearing ice sheets and warmer winters.  Fewer puffins.

I have always considered them to be on the list with sea otters and elephants as creatures we humans can watch for long periods of time without seeing enough.  My favorite puffin-time was watching adult birds fly into their burrows on England’s Farne Islands one spring…little fish hanging out of both sides the colorful beak. Each returning puffin would literally hit the ground running and dash into its burrow before s lurking fulmar could knock it down and steal its fish.
