What they are best suited to eat.  Oystercatchers can pull shellfish off of rocks. Godwits and snipe can probe with long beaks that have sensor-loaded tips, able to sense vibrations and “taste” what is in the sand or mud.  Avocets can filter food from muck and brine with their beaks.  Killdeer can chase insects on land.  And now we know something about what Western Sandpipers eat, besides crustaceans.  In a sentence: “The sandpipers appeared to be eating diatom-rich biofilm.”
