SWANS AND SWALLOWS

There was a pair of Trumpeter Swans in the western unit of the Tualatin NWR along Flett Road here in Yamhill County.  Then at Hagg Lake in Washington  County I saw 20 Tree Swallows feeding over the lake.  Less Surprising was a Spotted Sandpiper, but it was my first of the year.spotlessts1ts2At Hagg lake there was a full battle group of Green-winged Teal.  I watched two males there in a violent frenzy as they fought for their chosen female.  It’s that time of year when migrant waterfowl begin to pair off and that’s often a cause of aggression.

Snow remained in small, thin patches around the lake.
