NESTING SEASON IS NOW OPEN

An early morning visit to Rotary Park found only a few birds but there was a pair of Purple Finches moving through the trees, and the male was carrying a tuft of grayish-white lichen in his beak.  That’s nest-building behavior.  Perhaps he was only using it as a courtship lure,  “Look at my building skills.”  It may also mean they will be nest- building for real in no time.

The Steller’s Jays at Rotary Park were in voice this morning.  Their loud accusation echoed through the trees.  Most of the other birds were silent except for one singing Sing Sparrows along the edge of Heron Pond.  A male Anna’s was on a high perch and on the omnipresent high alert.a-h-m

Also at the park I saw my first outdoor mosquito of the season.  They must surely be entering a most reproductive spring with water pooled in every low spot in the area.  Only hours before I had encountered my first indoor mosquito, buzzing up the glass of a kitchen window in our house.

In our garden today the Bushtit Gang and the female VariedTnrush macde repeated visits.  It was the first I had seen the thrush on the feeder; she must like the shelled sunflower seeds I’ve added to the traysbt-bunchvt-bkvt-sipHer scalloped flank feathers are tres chic, oui?vt-sip2vt-leanvt-stopsvt-fedr2vt-fedr3vt-seedAll these thrush shots were taken through window glass.  She is far too shy to let me be outside near her.
