PARENTHOOD IS WORRY

The dog and I were at Joe Dancer Park early this morning.  Robins were singing from all sides.  A couple of Black-headed Grosbeaks added their longer tunes.  A flicker called a couple times.  An Osprey squealed down along the river.  There on the pavement was a fledgling robin, my first of the year. Overhead both parents were sounding the alarm.  Nora, the dog, ignores birds, finding their sounds  boring, their flight not worth pursuing. The adult robins wanted the youngster to get away from us but the clueless, gawky birdlet was more dazed than afraid.  It flew short distances, but its tail was sadly missing…still. Parenthood, a burden.

Later we saw a bright, fresh-feathered Chipping Sparrow in the right field fence.what tailWhat tail?pale gapeWorried parents alert to dog and bipedal predator with big central eye pointed at youngster.worried parentworried parent2Some distance away we found this remnant of a robin’s egg:AMRO EGGThe chipper Chipping Sparrow:CHSP FRNTCHSP JUMPSCHSP SIDECHSP TILTCHSP UPPCHSP WINGS
