BIRDING CARLETON, DAY #1

I am back here in muggy Minnesota for my college reunion.  Checked out the local birds on campus and in the college arboretum this afternoon.  How could I have lived here for four years and not noticed the Cardinals singing, the Chipping Sparrows feeding on the lawns, Chimney Swifts and Common Nighthawks overhead?  Did I not hear the singing House Wrens?  The American Goldfinches? The loud-mouthed Red-bellied Woodpeckers? Those years were full of books, a little beer, the Vietnam War and LBJ, finals, term papers, a college newspaper every week, the usual fretting over romance and sex and which meant what to whom, reading and more reading.  I walked into the college library today and felt like I’d returned home–reunion complete.  No wonder I missed the birds outside.

Mammals today: white-tailed deer, cottontail, eastern red squirrel.

Lightning bugs after dark. The un-mown parts of campus have been sown with milkweed and other native wild flowers.
