SEPTEMBER’S SONG IS SUNG

Sept. 30   End of this transition month.  There was a lone Turkey Vulture over Wennerberg.  Though some may winter in Willamette each year, this could be the last one I see in Oregon until 2018.  A single Lesser Yellowlegs in the mudflats next to a small slough along Shelton Road.  Rain, sun, rainbow—a late afternoon dog walk at Joe Dancer Park.

Still blooming: asters, a stubborn tansy ragwort, the most laggard of the Queen Anne’s lace race, dandelions and their sturdy cousins, wild chicory bluer than the autumn skies, ditto a few of sweet peas that were mown and thus had to regenerate buds, bindweed.

HEDGING FOR TOMORROW

The winter sparrows are hedging for their future.   Not the way Wall Street and Hedge Funders do it, betting against stability and safety.  The sparrows hedge by going into thickets or hedges and hunkering down.  IN the sun when its there, away from wind and rain at sunless times.  Along Lakeside Drive (with no lake in sight) there were White-crowns and Juncos.  In another thicket along the creek at Wennerberg Park were Golden-crowns and Song Sparrows.
