A FIRST FOR 2018

Not a rarity but the return of a familiar bird: two American Goldfinches in their pale winter plumage.  Not much golden color but the usual bold wing bars.  I think the wind blew them in from some less protected spot. They are only sporadic visitors to our feeders in any season and most of our local American Goldfinches head south for the winter.AG ON WIRE

Our siskin troop has burgeoned to more than a dozen birds daily. Juncos, of course, continue to be the most numerous and starlings come and raid then take their pirate practices elsewhere.  The  Townsend’s Warbler shows up early with the first juncos, then revisits during the day, always avoiding the bullying of the Audubon’s who likes to sleep in and is only present for short stints when the feeders are busiest.  Neither warbler feels safe when the feeders are empty.  They feel safer in crowds.
